THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING
BIBLE READING: LUKE 21: 12-15; EPHESIANS 1:16-23; COLOSSIANS 1:9; REVELATION 4:5
“The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding; the Spirit of Counsel and Might, the Spirit of Knowledge and of the Fear of the Lord.” Isaiah 11:2(NKJV)
The Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding is one of the Three Pairs of Names given to the Holy Spirit according to Isaiah 11:2. In this verse, Isaiah prophesied that the Messianic Shoot or Branch would be anointed with the Spirit of the Lord. Each of the Names for the Spirit is a Doublet that highlights Different Characteristics of Jesus or Yeshua.
The Hebrew words for Wisdom and Understanding are close synonyms. They both have to do with the Gift of Discernment of Truth. Jesus often demonstrated that Supernatural Gift during His Earthly Ministry. “When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get this Wisdom and these Mighty Works?” Matt. 13:54(NKJV)
Paul used another Name of Jesus, the Power of God and the Wisdom of God – “…but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the Power of God and the Wisdom of God.” 1 Cor. 1: 24(NKJV)
Jesus also promised that this Grace would manifest through us as we represent Him – “For I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.” Lk. 21:15(NKJV)
Our main text obviously talks about Jesus, but this can be your experience too. The Holy Spirit wants to be the Authority in your life and with that Authority comes His Care of you. Notice the kind of Care the Spirit gives. He comes as the Spirit of Wisdom to help you deal wisely and to teach you to be wise in all your actions, since there are days that we are not sound in our decisions.
He then comes as the Spirit of Understanding to help us distinguish Truth from error and discern Right from wrong. We see things and hear things, a lot of which we are not sure of. The Spirit cares enough to help us to make right decisions. He steers us into the right paths. (Isa. 30:21) This happens in us when the Holy Spirit becomes the Authority in our lives and in our Churches.
Holy Spirit, please be the Sole Authority in my life. Today, I humble myself and submit to Your Leadership in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
