BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 24:12; 2 TIMOTHY 3:1-5; JEREMIAH 2:1-2
“Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your First Love.” Revelation 2:4(NKJV)
Imagine a marriage where a wife performed all the duties of a wife without genuine love for her husband or a husband striving to provide income for his family but no longer loves his wife. There you have a cold, sterile relationship. Paul had once commended the Church in Ephesus for their Love for God (Eph. 1:15) but their Love for Jesus had grown cold leaving only a slave-like obedience to a set of rules and doctrines, hence the rebuke from Jesus in Revelation 2. The decline of the above Church from a Deep Love for Christ to a dead orthodoxy defines to a great extent the Present Day Church and believers.(Matt. 24:12) Jesus is our First Love and we tend to lose the initial love and enthusiasm we had when we came to Him newly because we lose sight of the seriousness of sin and as a result lose the thrill of our forgiveness.
Jesus commended the same Church for their labour, patience and intolerance of evil but all those things were not born out of genuine Love for Christ. Just like them, Jesus is calling us back to the First and Greatest Commandment which is to ” Love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind”(Matt. 22:37). Everything else we do for Him must be born out of Passionate Love for Him.
Heavenly Father, we repent of forsaking You our First Love and doing empty works in Your Name with our hearts cold towards You. Please rekindle the Fire of Your Love in our hearts as a Church and as individuals in Jesus’ Precious Name. Amen.
