Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. 1 Corinthians 7:2 (NKJV).

Choosing a life partner is the third biggest life decision you will make after your decision to make Jesus your Lord and Saviour and the decision to discover your purpose in life (see Acts 9:1-6). It is not a decision to be made hastily neither is it a decision made based on emotions which are unstable and fleeting.

We need to understand first of all that God does not choose or thrust a spouse on anybody (see Gen. 2:22-23). This is due to the fact that He made man as a free moral agent who must solely bear the responsibilities for his choices or decisions in life. In other words, God may reveal to you the right kind of spouse to marry but the onus lies on you to choose whether or not you will go the whole nine yards. We must also understand that when we are choosing a life partner, we are not just choosing a husband or wife. We are choosing an accomplice, a helper and someone who will go to war and fight battles with us (see 1Pet. 3:7).

Below are a few of the Basic Scriptural Principles to guide us in choosing a life partner:

  1. Knowledge: You must equip yourself with the knowledge of what marriage is all about through reading books and listening to messages that teach about marriage (see Prov. 24:3-4).
  2. Divine Guidance: Choosing a life partner is not a choice we make based on emotions alone. We must first of all seek God’s Guidance and get confirmation through the inward witness as well as counsel from authority figures in our lives (Prov. 3:5-6; 11:14; 15:22).
  3. Unity of Purpose: You must look out for someone who has the same beliefs as you. Look out for someone who is headed in the same direction in life as you are. For example as believers, the Bible commands us to marry “only in the Lord” (see 1 Cor. 7:39). This is also known as Spiritual Homogeneity. (see also Amos 3:3; 1 Cor. 15:33; 2 Cor. 6:14).
  4. Compatibility: This is the ability to coexist with someone without mutual contradiction. Areas include spiritual, biological, intellectual, and vocational compatibility.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the the power of choice. Please help us to use it wisely and choose our spouses in accordance to Your Will so that our marriages will contribute to the furtherance of Your Kingdom and ultimately bring You Glory in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
