BIBLE READING: COLOSSIANS 3:19; 1 PETER 3:7; 1 CORINTHIANS 3:7
“Husbands, love your wives just as Christ also loved the Church, and gave Himself for her; That He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the Word, That He might present her to Himself a Glorious Church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.” Ephesians 5:25-28 (NKJV).
The phrase “…even as Christ loves the church…” was addressed to husbands regarding how they should love their wives. It would interest you to know that the word “husband” in the English language means more than just the male partner in a marriage. It also means ‘the manager of another’s property’ and the verb form of it means ‘to manage prudently and economically’, according to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary. In other words, a husband is supposed to take what he was given (in this case, a wife) and manage her in such a way as to make her more valuable with time. The word ‘husband’ also shares the same etymological root with the word “husbandry” which has to do with cultivation, nurturing and judicious use of resources.
The Bible’s Model for Christian husbands is Christ Jesus Himself. Christian husbands should take an example from how Christ loves the Church and love their wives in the same way.
There are three things we can pick from the key text as practical ways a husband should love his wife:
(1.) Firstly, he should love her sacrificially: He should be willing to sacrifice and possibly pay the ultimate price for his wife, if need be.
(2.) Secondly, cleansing and nurturing: That is, he should mould, disciple, teach, correct and lead his wife aright (see 1Cor. 14:35).
(3.) Lastly, showcasing an improved version: This third thing is the result of the first two i.e., being able to present a more glorious, refined and well-nurtured version of the woman he started with.
In these Last Days where the marriage institution has been degraded by the world’s system and man-woman relationship perverted, we must shine our light in this darkness by modelling our marriages after Sound Biblical Standards. (see Matt. 7:24-27)
We lift up marriages before the Throneroom of God and we ask for grace to come upon every Christian marriage so that they will reflect Kingdom Values and bring restoration and transformation to many other marriages that are struggling in our society. O Lord, for all these we pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
