BIBLE READING: ECCLESIASTES 4:8-12, AMOS 3:3, GENESIS 11:6
“Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father which is in Heaven.” Matthew 18:19 (NKJV).
Agreement is the foundation for unity and unity is the greatest force in the world. Nothing can beat unity hence the only way to defeat it is to introduce disunity. That was why in Genesis 11, God attested to the fact that even though the people were on a course that was against the Divine Plan, they would succeed because they were one. He had to bring disunity by scattering their language in order to defeat that ungodly plan (see Gen.11:1-8).
In the New Testament, Jesus reiterated the same fact when he said “… if two of you shall agree…” When there is agreement between two or more people, there is great power available to them. Most importantly, if the two people in a marriage agree, that marriage becomes a formidable force that can overcome any challenge. That is why the devil will fight that unity and agreement as much as he can and try to bring division, disunity and ultimately divorce. Don’t let him! (Eph.4:27).
It is more important to be united and be wrong than to be divided and be right. In other words, being united takes preeminence over being right. We must fight to maintain unity in purpose, unity in prayer, unity in vision and unity in language. Here are a few tips that can help marriages, families and organisations in their pursuit of unity:
- The leader must communicate clearly what the vision and objectives are: You cannot agree with what you don’t know (see Hab.2:2).
- We should understand the purpose and power of unity in diversity: Unity is not conformity or uniformity (see Eph. 4:16). We can agree inspite of our differences.
- Disunity is also a spirit that can be dealt with in the place of prayer: As the popular adage goes, “United we stand, divided we fall.” The spirit of disunity and discord is part of satan’s signature hence, we must oppose it in all its forms (see Prov. 6:19b).
Father God, we make a commitment today to work towards unity, to be in agreement with our leaders in the home, in the Church and in the different organisations to which we belong so that we can accomplish the vision and assignment You have given us. So help us God in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen
