BIBLE READING: JOB 28:28; JUDE 25; PSALM 19:9
“The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Wisdom: and the Knowledge of the Holy is Understanding.” Proverbs 9:10 (NKJV).
Wisdom is one of the most sought after qualities in the civilized world. According to the Holy Scriptures, King Solomon was not just the wealthiest man of his era but also the wisest (see 1Kgs. 4:29-34).
As we have seen in previous devotionals, knowledge is acquired information, understanding is assimilated information while wisdom is applied information. In other words, genuine wisdom is known by the accompanying results: “But wisdom is justified of all her children” (Lk. 7:35).
However, the only way to truly understand and appreciate wisdom is to go to its foundation proper. The Bible emphatically states that in the Book of Job: “And to man He said, “Behold, the Fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 28:28). The Bedrock or Beginning Point of Wisdom is the Fear of the Lord i.e., Reverence or Veneration. Nobody can truly claim to be wise without having the Fear of the Lord. That is to say, genuine wisdom involves obedience of God’s Principles, which is evidence of Holiness born out of Reverence.
The Holy Scriptures emphasize the Truth of the Lord God Almighty being the Only One Who has the Right to be called Absolutely Wise: “Now to the King Eternal, Immortal, Invisible, to God Who alone is Wise, be Honour and Glory forever and ever. Amen.” (1Tim.1:17). Pause and meditate on this for a moment. The Fear of God binds us to Him Who lays an Absolute Claim on Wisdom, thereby making us wise by association and impartation. Never forget that of the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, the Fear of the Lord is the Chief Cornerstone.
Heavenly Father, please grant us a Revelation of the Fear of the Lord and cause us to be enveloped with the Spirit of Reverence. We humbly ask this in the Mighty Name of Jesus. Amen.
