“Therefore be patient, brethren, until the Coming of the Lord. See how the Farmer waits for the precious fruit of the Earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.” James 5:7(NKJV)

During times of harvest, the farmer has a role to play in ensuring he gathers all that he should because if he doesn’t do so in due season then that which was once ripe will soon become rotten. This is the same way with souls. We have a role to play in the gathering in of the End-time Harvest about which we must be diligent. If we don’t, the devil will go in and make it his harvest and it will turn all bad.

One of our core responsibilities in the season of harvest is to pray. There are various ways to pray in times of harvest:

Firstly, the harvest needs reapers who will take possession of the fruits. Therefore we should pray for the deployment of men/women to be used of God to gather the souls so that the devil will not get to them first. Luke 10:2 says, Then He said to them, The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest.

Another critical way to pray in the season of harvest is to ask God to actually open our eyes to those that are ripe for harvest. There are men and women around us in our schools, offices, estates, neighbourhoods etc. These are souls ready to be won but we may not know until we ask God to open our eyes to see them. John 4:35 (KJV) sums it thus; Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

It is also important to pray for a heart of compassion towards unbelievers for only when we are compassionate towards them can we really understand the gaping void they feel in their hearts which they usually numb sometimes with trivia, frivolities, ostentatious living or in pursuit of strange gods. When we pray we become more discerning and will be moved to reach out to them on behalf of Christ — But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest, that he will send out labourers into his harvest (Matt.9:36-38).

Lastly, also pray that the Holy Spirit who actually does the Work of conviction will work in every ready heart. It is the Holy Spirit that sustains the heart of man and makes it broken before God. Amos 4:7 is a simulation of the work of the Holy Spirit in preparing the hearts of men to receive the Gospel— I also withheld rain from you, when there were still three months to the harvest. I made it rain on one city, I withheld rain from another city. One part was rained upon, and where it did not rain the part withered.

• Ask God to deploy you into the harvest, to make you a worthy labourer that will seek to ensure the harvest around you is not lost.

• Ask God to give you a heart of compassion and open your eyes to the men and women due for harvest around you.
