BIBLE READING: PSALM 144:11-15; EPHESIANS 2:18-22; 2CORINTHIANS 5:18-20
“But you are a Chosen Generation, a Royal Priesthood, a Holy Nation, His Own Special People, that you may proclaim the Praises of Him Who called you out of darkness into His Marvelous Light” 1Peter 2:9 (NKJV).
The Church of Jesus Christ is the Embassy of the Lord God Almighty upon the Earth. Just before restoring the sight of the man who was born blind, the Lord Jesus declared this to His disciples: “As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the world” (John 9:5).
Carefully observe the phrase, “As long as I am in the world….” Here, the Lord was pointing out that His being the Light of the world was dependent on Him actually being in the world. This is why He also told His disciples: “You are the Light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matt. 5:14). Meaning the Lord Jesus left the responsibility of illumination for the sake of the Kingdom to His Body, the Church. Dr Myles Munroe usually said, “When purpose is unknown, abuse is inevitable.” This implies that any Church that fails to understand the purpose for which she exists is in danger of becoming a liability rather than an asset to God (see Rev. 2:1-5).
The Body of Christ or the Church exists to accomplish five major purposes:
(1.) Worship: This is also known as Upreach which is the primary assignment of all Christians (see John 4:23-24). The Church grows stronger through worship.
(2.) Fellowship: This is also known as Consolidation or Inreach because Christianity is not just about believing but also about becoming (see Heb. 10:25). The Church grows warmer through fellowship.
(3.) Missions: Christians exist to reach out to the lost, necessitating the term “Outreach” (see Matt. 24:14). The Church grows larger through missions.
(4.) Maturity: This is also known as Discipleship, the process whereby Christlike believers are being churned out (see Rom. 8:29; Eph. 4:11-13). The Church grows deeper through maturity.
(5.) Ministry: This is the output stage of the Church whereby ambassadors who are representatives of the Kingdom of God are being deployed to shine forth the Light in the darkness of the world as kings and priests (see Rev. 5:10). The Church grows broader through ministry.
Heavenly Father, we give You all the Glory for being an Intentional God. You made us the Called-out Ones to fulfill a Fivefold Purpose. We receive the Grace to completely accomplish all Five Purposes of the Church in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
