”The Lord your God, Who goes before you, He will fight for you, according to all He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, and in the wilderness where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place.” Deuteronomy 1:30 – 31(NKJV).

Fathers are foundations that carry the whole building. This order was set by God Himself and it has not been faulted since the Foundation of the Earth. Just about anyone can give you a few gifts, but when it comes to your inheritance, it has to come from your Father. Fathers are the only sources of inheritance. A multimillionaire does not just give his inheritance to someone he just met. Inheritances are earned by virtue of DNA i.e., blood relationship or simply father-son relationship.

The term Father is subjective and open to diverse interpretation by scholars. It is therefore imperative to have a clear understanding of the meaning before answering the question posed by today’s devotional. In Greek, the word Father is called Abba and in Latin it is called Pater. In both languages, it means “Source and Sustenance”. In other words, a person that gave you life and sustained you by providing the necessities required during infancy. You, as a human being, did not fall from the sky because God has placed each of us in families (see Psalm 68:6).

As a result of the sensitive nature of Fatherhood, you can have many instructors but only one spiritual father: “For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.” (1 Cor. 4:15). God brings teachers and mentors your way and we all need many of them but just like you can attend so many schools, you always know who your father and mother are as well as what family you come from. You can listen to and different people on the radio, online, or on the television but you should know who your life source is. When you meet the man God brings to your life as your father, the Spirit of God Himself lets you know: “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit, that we are children of God.” (Rom. 8:16). There is a witness the Holy Spirit gives you within your spirit. There are many mentors but very few fathers hence the importance of discerning and acknowledging them like Elisha did : “And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.” (2 Kings 2:12).

In order to receive an inheritance, you have to be born or adopted into a family and then live respectably within that family’s guidelines. An inheritance is the blessing passed down generationally from fathers to their sons. Only true sons are entitled to an inheritance. Your father in ministry gives you the ministry you carry. He also develops your ministry when it is still a seed inside you. You have to be guided by the Holy Spirit to know your father because it is possible to receive curses instead of your inheritance for diverse reasons. Elisha as a father did not raise anyone to continue after him because he was not patient (which is one of the major attributes of true fathers) in raising his son Gehazi. And instead of a blessing, he cursed his son Gehazi and left him with generational leprosy (see 2 Kings 5:27). Your spiritual father has a major influence on your life so let the Lord guide you as you discover yours wisely with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the Revelation of Spiritual Fatherhood. Lord, I accept Your Grace to know and acknowledge my true father whom You have ordained for me. I receive Grace to serve him, so that I will inherit the Blessing and not a curse like Gehazi in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
