BIBLE READING: JOHN 5:35; EXODUS 21:1-6; RUTH 1:14-18

“But Peter answered Him,“ Lord,to whom shall we go? You have the Words of Eternal Life.” John 6:68 (NKJV).

One of the major characteristics of a genuine son in any household, whether biological or spiritual, is their permanence. Sons never dislodge themselves from their father’s house, unlike servants. Every servant seeks to use his master as a launching pad for his own ministry as seen in the case of Jacob in his transactions with Laban his father-in-law: “For what you had before I came was little, and it has increased to a great amount; the Lord has blessed you since my coming. And now, when shall I also provide for my own house?” (Gen.30:30).

What many fail to realize is that God never commissions servants. He only commissions sons. There are three kinds of people who migrate to any ministry i.e. those who come for a reason, those who come for a season and those who come for a lifetime.

A clear Scriptural example is seen in the life and beginning of the ministry of Elisha the prophet (see 2Kings 2). As his spiritual father Elijah was about ascending to Heaven, he tested Elisha on three occasions i.e. at Bethel, Jericho and Jordan. However, he stuck to his father like glue to the very end, resulting in the sons of the prophets making their confession: “Now when the sons of the prophets who were from Jericho saw him, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha. ”And they came to meet him, and bowed to the ground before him.” (2Kings 2:15). Elisha stayed true and committed to Elijah for he was more than just a servant. He was a son indeed.

The spirit of the father will only rest on the son. Servants only come to collect equipment and endorsement before launching out to pioneer their own ministries. True sons abide forever through thick and thin, circumstances notwithstanding. As a famous poem goes: “Whether the weather be cold or whether the weather be hot; Whatever the weather, we’ll weather the weather whether we like it or not.” That is the true attitude of true sons who abide in their father’s house forever.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the grace of Sonship. Help us, O Lord, to become genuine sons who abide in our father’s house forever in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
