BIBLE READING: ISAIAH 53:5; JOHN 3:14-15; NUMBERS 21:6-9
“So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said “It is finished!” And bowing His Head, He gave up His Spirit.” John 19:30(NKJV)
All over the Christian World, today is being celebrated as Good Friday, the Climax of the Sufferings of our Lord Jesus Christ. God Almighty Himself manifested in the Flesh that He might be a partaker of flesh and blood “that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil.” (Hebrews 2:14) The irony of Good Friday is that the excruciating and unfathomable suffering Jesus was subjected to was anything but good i.e. on the surface. However, the shedding of His Blood led to the Conception of the Church, the number one life-giving Institution in the Universe.
As the Lord Jesus left a Bloody Trail from Gethsemane (where He sweated great drops of blood) through the outskirts of the Praetorium (where He was brutally scourged) all the way to the Old Rugged Cross, something of Prophetic Significance occurred: The Scripture tells us this following indisputable truth: “And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him….”(Luke 23:33)
Why Calvary? Also known as Golgotha i.e. a word of Chaldean origin, Calvary is a Greek word literally meaning “the place of the skull.” Whose skull, one may ask? Ancient Jewish tradition has it that Adam was buried on that very same spot where Jesus was crucified, hence the reference to the skull. Consider the Second Adam dying on the exact spot where the first Adam was buried (see 1Corinthians 15:45) Yet another Jewish tradition states that Calvary was located at the exact spot where Abraham attempted sacrificing his son Isaac (a type of Christ). Simply amazing! The Programme of Redemption was detailed to the letter and required the Shedding of Jesus’ Blood as the Foundation of the Church, His Body and Bride.
Tertullian the early Christian apologist once said that, “the blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church.” If the sacrifice of mere men who died for the Cause of Christianity had that much impact, how much more Christ Jesus the Foundation Himself! (see 1Corinthians 3:11). The Church of Jesus Christ may have been born with Power on the day of Pentecost but She was conceived in Blood on Calvary. Blessed be the Name of the Lord God our Redeemer.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the Sacrifice of Your Son Jesus upon Calvary. By Your Blood, we gain access into Your Very Presence, therefore we are eternally grateful. Receive all the Glory due You in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
