BIBLE READING: PSALM 40:7-8; MATTHEW 26:36-56; MARK 14:32-50
“Then I said “Behold, I have come—In the Volume of the Book it is written of Me—To do Your Will, O God” Hebrews 10:7(NKJV).
The power of choice in every area of life cannot be overemphasized. You are where you are today because of the choices you made yesterday. Man generally has a personal agenda for his life which he relentlessly pursues on a daily basis. However, the Bible says “Mortals make elaborate plans but God has the Last Word.” (Proverbs 16:1 The Message Bible). In other words, one of the most frustrating experiences to have is to swim against the Tidal Wave of God’s Will, hence every believer must have a Gethsemane Experience in order to be fully used of Him.
On that fateful night when our Lord Jesus Christ was arrested to be tried and crucified for our sakes, He retreated to the garden called Gethsemane with Peter, James and John. With a Heavy Burden in His Heart and anticipating the Showdown that awaited Him, He fell before God the Father, agonizing in prayers: “He went a little farther and fell on His Face, and prayed, saying “O My Father, if it is possible, let this Cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I Will but as You Will.” (Matthew 26:39).
Jesus was at a major crossroads. He had reached the point of no return where He would be separated from His Loving Father for three days and three nights that the claims of Justice would be fully satisfied as He bore the sins of the entire world upon Himself (see John 1:29).The Lord Jesus could have decided to say “You know what, Father? I am developing cold feet as far as this Cross Business is concerned. Is there no other way? A less gruesome shortcut perhap?” But thanks be to the Lord God Almighty! Jesus submitted His Will under the Ultimate Will of the Father, eventually leading Him to “bringing many sons to glory” (Hebrews 2:10b).
The word “Gethsemane” is derived from the Aramaic term “Gat shemanim”, which literally means “an oil press within an olive grove.” This is Highly Significant in the grand scheme of things. The anointing oil with which the Lord will anoint the nations must come from crushed olives. The moment you allow God’s Will to enfold yours completely, crushing the life out of it, there is no limit to the scope of your usefulness to Him. May we receive a Gethsemane Experience and may our hearts cry out like Mary the mother of Jesus, “Let it be to me according to Your Word.” (Luke 1:38).
Heavenly Father, we glorify Your Holy Name. We submit completely to Your Will for our lives, relegating ours totally to the background. Receive all the Adoration in the Mighty Name of Jesus. Amen.
