BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 5:43-48
“Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40(NKJV)
We are still discussing the Cross because the huge possibilities It occasioned for man are Infinite. The Cross of Jesus is the Foundation and Bedrock of our Redemption and Glorification, hence the need to fully understand its potentials because what you don’t understand cannot benefit you in the Kingdom. In our devotional yesterday, we dissected the Vertical Dimension of the Cross, which is the restoration of man’s intimate relationship and daily communion with God. Today, we will discuss the Horizontal Dimension of the Cross, which is the restoration of our love and affection to our fellow men as ordained by Christ.
Christianity is very much about loving God, but it is also about loving His people as He has loved us. Now think about the Horizontal Dimension of the Cross, the part that goes left to right or East to West. This dimension regulates the relationships in your life i.e. your relationships with the people who matter: your spouse, your friends, your family, your co-workers. Those are the “horizontal” relationships around you, the people with whom you interact as you go through your life. The people who are within your sphere of influence are supposed to see and experience Christ love through you as He commanded us – “This is His commandment, that we believe [with personal faith and confident trust] in the Name of His Son Jesus Christ, and [that we unselfishly] love and seek the best for one another, just as He commanded us.” 1 John 3:23(AMP).
When your Vertical Relationship (with God) is not in place or is wavering, your Horizontal relationship (with man) follows the same path because the spiritual controls the physical. The sum of your earthly relationships, whether you know it or acknowledge it, are held up or let down by the condition of your Vertical Relationship with God. If your relationship with God is not in the right place, all the relationships with the people in your life will be affected or fall because in Jesus all things consist and He holds all things together – “And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist of. And He is the Head of the Body, the Church, Who is the Beginning, the Firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the Pre eminence. Colossians 1:17-18(NKJV)
The same principles that regulate the parts of the human body also govern our relationships with one another because though we are many, we are One Body in Christ – “ so we, who are many, are [nevertheless just] one body in Christ, and individually [we are] parts one of another [mutually dependent on each other]. Romans 12:5(AMP) As the Body of Christ, Jesus gave us a New Commandment that we should love one another unselfishly as an emblem that we are His disciples I am giving you a New Commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you too are to love one another. By this everyone will know that you are My disciples if you have love and unselfish concern for one another.” John 13:34-35(AMP)
Father, I thank You for restoring my relationship with other men through the Price Jesus paid on the Cross. I ask for Grace to be able to keep the New Commandment, to love men unselfishly just as you loved us and gave Your Life for us in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
