“Who Being the Brightness of His Glory and the Express Image of His Person, and upholding all things by the Word of His Power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the Right Hand of the Majesty on High.” Hebrews 1:3(NKJV).

Discipleship is one of the most underrated and misunderstood concepts within the context of Christianity. According to statistics, there are about 2.5 billion people on Earth who refer to themselves as professing Christians with over 700 million of the Pentecostal cum Charismatic persuasion. However, the Lord Jesus Christ Himself Whom the aforementioned multitude profess daily said ever so emphatically “For many are called, but few chosen.” (Matthew 20:16b) In other words, the Lord Himself determines our calling but our level of yieldedness to the discipleship process determines the extent to which we can be used of Him.

When God decided to create mankind, He made this remarkable and profound statement: “Then God said, “Let Us make Man in Our Image, according to Our Likeness; let them have dominion…” (Genesis 1:26) There are two vital points to note from the above Scripture:
(1.) God’s Image: This refers to the Being Side or God’s Personality. Man was designed to be a reflection of God’s Character and Attributes i.e. the Sum Total of Who He is (Exodus 34:6-7).

(2.) God’s Likeness: This refers to the Doing Side or God’s Functionality i.e., how He does things and achieves His Results. Man was also designed to be a reflection and custodian of God’s Principles (Joshua 1:8). However, the Principles without the Principal create empowered monsters while the Principal without the Principles creates pious simpletons. The end result of genuine Christianity is Christlikeness which marks an end to all our spiritual warfare even as we are changed into His Likeness (2 Cor.3:18; Eph. 4:13). This can only be achieved through the unhindered discipleship process.

Discipleship is the factory which conforms the children of God into the express Image of Christ. It is the mould out of which replicas of our Lord Jesus Christ are reproduced constantly to reveal a combination of His Character, His Charisma and His Counsel to an untoward generation that “eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.”(Romans 8:19b). May we arise to the grave task of mass-producing our Saviour through genuine discipleship.

Heavenly Father, to You alone we ascribe all the Glory. You raised our Lord Jesus Christ to be the Express Image of Your Person. O Lord, we ask You to help us in the same breath to become the Express Image of Jesus to this godless and needy generation in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
