For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Romans 8:13(NKJV)

Discipline is a major code of every disciple of Christ. What is discipline? Discipline is taken from an original Latin word, “disciplina” which means instruction, tuition and training. It is from the same word discipulus which means disciple. A disciple is a disciplined follower of his master. To disciple means to discipline. Discipline is the number one code of all true disciples. Part of discipline is self mortification. We are told to mortify our bodies (Colossians 3:5).

The word mortify means to kill, deaden, or to subdue. To become dead to. We are to discipline our flesh so that we don’t allow it to lead us into lifestyles that do not please God (Romans 8:13). Living to please your flesh will lead to certain death, we must therefore mortify ourselves daily so as to gain control over our flesh and live godly lives here on earth.

How do we mortify our flesh so that it can die to the lust of this life? By the Spirit! The Holy Spirit is God’s instrument of flesh mortification. When we do the things that enhance our spiritual life, we kill our flesh and by so doing install discipline in our lives. What are the things that enhance our spiritual lives? Prayer, fasting, study of the word, evangelism, watching and listening to gospel materials, submission to authority, fellowship with other believers. These are the things the flesh hates and whatever the flesh hates kills it. We mortify the flesh by doing the things of the Spirit. Now is the time to take control.

Holy Spirit, I confess my weakness and indiscipline, I have yielded to my flesh more than I yield to you. I ask You today to strengthen my weak knees in the place of prayer. Give me grace to overcome every desire and craving of the flesh that keeps me from engaging in spiritual activities in Jesus name, amen!
