“Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus: [Let Him be your example in humility:] Who, although being essentially One with God and in the Form of God [possessing the Fulness of the Attributes which make God God], did not think this equality with God was a thing to be eagerly grasped or retained, But stripped Himself [of all privileges and rightful dignity], so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a human being. And after He had appeared in human form, He abased and humbled Himself [still further] and carried His obedience to the extreme of death, even the Death of the Cross! Therefore [because He stooped so low] God has highly exalted Him and has freely bestowed on Him the name that is above every name,That in (at) the Name of Jesus every knee should (must) bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, Philippians 2:5- 10(AMP)

One of the major qualities of a disciple is “Humility.” Our Lord Jesus modelled humility to us. Apostle Peter admonishes us in 1 Peter 2:21 (AMP); “For even to this were you called [it is inseparable from your vocation]. For Christ also suffered for you, leaving you [His personal] example, so that you should follow in His footsteps.”

Our Lord was actually Humility Personified. It has been said that humility is “recognizing and acknowledging one’s total dependence upon the Lord and seeking His will for every decision.” It is “realizing that we ourselves are nothing, but we are everything in Christ.”

Our Lord Jesus sets the tone for our attitude. He says, “Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.” Matthew 23:12(NKJV). James says the same; “…God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6(NKJV). “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up” – James 4:10(NKJV). We must humble ourselves before God and this will enable us to be humble before others.

Peter emphasises the same virtue, connecting our humility before other believers with our humility before God: “…Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time” -1 Peter 5:5-6(NKJV).

You can see that God values your humility, but He despises any pride in your heart. Micah 6:8(AMP) says, “He [God] has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24, NKJV).
