BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 10:24-25; ACTS 11:26
“A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.” Luke 6:40(NKJV)
In order to have a proper understanding of discipleship, it then becomes necessary to really understand who a disciple actually is. Nowadays, every Tom, Dick and Harry who identifies with one Church or the other can eagerly claim to be a disciple due to certain services they render in the House of God. However, the sharp rebuke of our Lord Jesus Christ ought to give us a reality check for He will tell such “disciples” on the Last Day “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” (Matthew 7:23).
Who then is a disciple? The term was derived from the Greek word “mathetes” and first used by the Ancient Greek philosopher Herodotus. It actually indicates a person who makes a significant, personal lifelong commitment to follow another person. In other words, a disciple of Christ is a disciplined follower of Jesus Christ who is committed to adopting His Lifestyle,Teachings and Values through intimacy with Him.The Bible tells us the following: “Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, And to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons.”(Mark 3:14-15).
One cannot represent whom one does not know because you become what you behold. There are five major characteristics of genuine disciples of Jesus Christ:
• Total Submission: This involves the careful obedience of His Principles (see John 14:15).
• Total Mastery: This involves memorizing His Teachings and Words (see Psalm 37:31).
• Total Understanding: This involves grasping and accepting His Interpretation of the Scriptures (see 2Peter 1:21).
• Total Imitation: This involves adopting His Lifestyle for a New Life requires a New Lifestyle (see Ephesians 4:22-24).
• Total Duplication: This involves making other disciples for Him (see Matthew 28:19).
As we can see, the term “disciple” is often used but seldom understood. There is a need to carefully scrutinize the anatomy of a disciple that we may know exactly what kind of believers we really are. The identity of a disciple is found in the Person to Whom his allegiance goes so let us become disciples of Christ Jesus indeed.
Glorious Father in Heaven, thank You for Your faithfulness in our lives. Grant us, O Lord, the wisdom and grace to become disciples of Christ indeed. Have Your way in and through us in Jesus’ Mighty Name.
