IRON SHARPENETH IRON
Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens a friend's character. Proverbs 27:17 (ISV)
This proveb relates to the influence which men have on one another. The writer names iron as the sharpener rather than the whetstone, because he wishes to denote that one man is of the same nature as another, and that this identity makes mutual action possible and advantageous by interaction. Iron does not dull iron, it sharpens it when it comes in contact with another. Whenever you are pregnant with a vision, the kind of people you hang around or interact with matters because it can make or mar your vision.
If you realise that you become demoralized each time you spend time with anyone or group of people, then the stuff they are made of is questionable, and a threat to your resultant productivity. They may be made of wood, plastic or some other material that cannot sharpen your iron. If your association with someone is not making you or the person better, it may probably be making you worse such a relationship should be reconsidered.
At the age of 12, Jesus followed His parents to the feast in Jerusalem but while others left, He stayed back for extra days of Bible study. Luke 2:46-47 reveals that, three days later they finally discovered him in the Temple, sitting among the religious teachers, listening to them and asking questions. All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. Jesus who is our role model practiced this principle early in life when He preferred to tarry with scholars of the scripture instead of being among teenagers that may have been juvenile delinquents. Mary would have also understood His quest to hang around people who boost His faith because when she was pregnant with Jesus, she stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then went back to her own home (Luke 1:56).
